Waxes in mineral oils and fuels will fall out at lower temperatures. This will hinder lubricant and fuel performance as wax can clog filters and reduce/eliminate flow.

PPDs act as wax crystal modifiers that alter the size of the crystal. They do this by absorbing on the surface of newly formed crystals or by co-crystallizing with the precipitating wax.  Both mechanisms inhibit crystal growth and keep the oil fluid.
